Ich möchte jeden einzelnen von euch dazu zwingen, Jane Austen im Original zu lesen.
Es sollte verboten werden zu sterben, bevor man dies nicht getan hat.
Auch diejenigen unter euch, die nicht gern auf Englisch lesen oder zu viel auf Englisch lesen müssen und es "anstrengend" finden, sollten Austen lesen.
Ich meine, wer kann bei Sätzen wie den folgenden nicht vor Entzücken in Ohnmacht fallen?!
"In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed.You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you."
"In marrying your nephew I should not consider myself as quitting that sphere. He is a gentleman; I am a gentleman's daughter: so far we are equal."
Dieser Charme! Dieser Wortwitz! Es gibt sicherlich noch vieeeel bessere Beispiele, aber diese sind vorerst ausreichend.
Ich liebe es, dass sie die Hauptpersonen, wenn sie versuchen, so zu tun als seien sie glücklich (es aber natürlich eigentlich nicht sind), niemals sagen lässt "I am happy".
Nein! Sie sagen dann immer "I am content" bzw so etwas wie "I shall be perfectly content" oder "I feel quite content".
Zum Abschluss meines Lobgesanges noch der erste Abschnitt von Pride&Prejudice, nur für euch:
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.
However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.
"My dear Mr. Bennet," said his lady to him one day, "have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?"
Mr. Bennet replied that he had not.
"But it is," returned she; "for Mrs. Long has just been here, and she told me all about it."

"What is his name?"
"Bingley."
"Is he married or single?"
"Oh! single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls!"
"How so? how can it affect them?"
"My dear Mr. Bennet," replied his wife, "how can you be so tiresome! You must know that I am thinking of his marrying one of them."
"Is that his design in settling here?"

Und, wer möchte sich das Buch leihen, um weiterzulesen?
Haha, du spinnst ja. Ich mag Jane Austen eigentlich nicht besonders. Mit der Tante darf ich mich schon immer in der Uni rumschlagen. Pfui, Pharao! ;-) Aber vielleicht guck ich mir mal die Serie an. Im Februar hab ich ja hoffentlich genug Zeit dafür.
